Leonie van Veen - soprano

The soprano Leonie van Veen studied classical singing at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. After graduating cum laude in 2003, she continued at the Dutch National Opera Academy in Amsterdam. She finished this Master degree in 2005 cum laude.

During her studies she took lessons from Gerda van Zelm and Barbara Pearson. Leonie participated in master classes from Miranda van Kralingen, Cynthia Buchan, John Bröcheler, Graham Clarck and Ann Murray.

Leonie performed several opera roles such as Karolina in the Dve Vdovy (The Two Widows) by Smetana, Alcina in Alcina by Händel, Miranda in The Tempest by Purcell, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte by Mozart, Lena in La princesse jaune by Saint-Saëns, Adina in L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti and Antigone and Judith in the modern operas Styx and Bluebeard by Chiel Meijering.

Leonie also works as a concert singer, with a repertoire varying from classical to contemporary music. She performed Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium, St. John and Matthew Passion, The Messiah by Händel, Gloria by Vivaldi, Requiem, Exsultate Jubilate and C-minor Mass by Mozart, Stabat Mater by Haydn, Requiem by Fauré and Ein deutsches Requiem by Brahms.

Leonie and pianist Saskia Lankhoorn together form a lied duo, performing concerts throughout Europe. As a duo Leonie and Saskia took several song interpretation master classes by Elly Ameling, Meinard Kraak, Rudolf Jansen and Graham Johnson.
